The New Mexico Mounted Police was established in 1905 as the first law enforcement agency in the state and gained a reputation for effectiveness, especially after responding to the attack by Pancho Villa in 1916. However, it was abolished in 1921 and later reformed as the New Mexico Mounted Patrol in 1941, which remains an
all-volunteer state law enforcement agency today.
