E. O. Tompkins was the City Marshal of Nevada City, CA. in 1858 & 59. This is one of the earliest California law badges known to exist. It was made by a Nevada City jeweler and is sterling silver, hand engraved. Paul Friedrich Collection.

Steve Venard's Nevada City Marshal Badge.

This simple badge was worn by Jacob Teeter when he was first appointed Constable of Meadow Lake Township.

In 1886, J. C. Irvine started his badge making company in San Francisco. That same year, C. A. Green was elected Constable of Meadow Lake Township and ordered this beautiful badge. The badge was passed on to six more constables, Jacob Teeter - 1890, C. A. Anderson - 1892, C. W. Long - 1894, I. F. Harvey - 1898, Wm McDougald - 1902 and finally August Schlumpf in 1906. After his term ended in 1910, August kept the badge and handed it down to his son, Spike. Spike answered an ad I was running for badges and I ended up purchasing it and two others from him. One of them, his fathers deputy sheriff badge is shown below.

August Schlumpf wore this generic Nevada county deputy sheriff badge.

A nice looking Nedvada county shield cut out star, circa 1900.

14k gold badge of Sheriff George Carter with presentation on back.

William Reynolds Undersheriff badge with the year 1888 engraved on the reverse. Reynolds had a long career in Nevada County law enforcement. He was elected City Marshal of Grass Valley on May 1, 1876. This job also gave him the title of "street overseer", poundmaster and city license collector.
