New York Assistant Alderman Police badge.  Reverse reads Samuel R. Mabbatt Esq. Asst. Ald'n  3rd Ward 1851.

New York Councilman Police badge.  Reverse is dated 1856.

New York Aldermanic badge, named to Thomas Stephens 4th Aldermanic Dist. 1859.

The Board of Assistant Alderman was abolished in 1853 and replaced with a Board of Councilmen.  Thus the Assistant Alderman badges are rarer than the Alderman badges, the Board of Alderman continuing.

Alderman of the City were required to take an active role in maintaining order and were thus provided police powers and official police badges.
